Law firm Edelson PC is filing 30 additional lawsuits against OpenAI connecting the company to the Tumbler Ridge shooting, escalating the legal theory from negligence to "aiding and abetting" — meaning they're arguing ChatGPT gave the shooter something he specifically asked for and wouldn't have easily found elsewhere. The suits also name Chris Lehane, OpenAI's head of policy, personally. The evidence linking ChatGPT to the shooter remains unconfirmed, and that's the load-bearing problem for Edelson's whole theory: you can't aid something you didn't know was happening, and if prosecutors can't prove the shooter actually used ChatGPT in a specific way, the aiding-and-abetting claim collapses at first review. But these cases don't need to win to cost OpenAI enormously in legal fees, executive attention, and reputation. If even one of these suits survives early dismissal, AI companies will almost certainly start building explicit conversation limits around users who express suicidal ideation or violence — something they've avoided doing because it's technically and ethically messy.
