Crusoe, a company that builds the physical facilities that run AI — massive warehouses full of specialized chips, essentially power plants for computation — just raised $3.9 billion and is now valued at $30.9 billion. The interesting detail is that they're building both giant centralized data centers and smaller modular "AI factories" that can be deployed more locally. This matters to non-engineers because AI costs are fundamentally infrastructure costs, and whoever controls that infrastructure has leverage over everyone who depends on it. When your company's AI tools get more expensive or less available, it's usually something like this — a bet on physical hardware — that explains why.
The most consequential AI story today involves water and satellites, but the one getting the most attention involves speculative extinction — which tells you something about how hard it is to have a useful public conversation about any of this.
